Application Guideline

Japan-Hong Kong International Music Competition application guideline

  • 1.Japan-Hong Kong International Music Competition (JHIMC) accepts anyone regardless of nationality. We are looking forward to meeting with young people from the entire world.
  • 2. Please send the filled in application form with the other required documents to the secretariat office by July 4th for the entry to July 20th competition, or July 18th for the entry to July 30th/31st competition (we accept the documents postmarked on this day). Please refer to the following for the required documents.
  • See bellow for the required documents;

    • >Application form, prescribed for each category of “Young Artist Category” and “Professional Category”.

    • >Copy of one of the followings: HKID Card, Birth certificate, passport of the applicants.

    • >Application fee via bank check made payable to "Japan Hong Kong Musicians Alliance". Or receipt of bank deposit.(via ATM or bank transfer) Application fee is not refundable regardless of any reasons.
  • 3. JHIMC administration office will send you a confirmation letter once we receive all necessary documents and payment. Application form with missing information can not be accepted, therefore please kindly double check your application form before sending.
  • 4. All the application forms will be processed by the executive committee under the strict protection of confidentiality. The committee might request further information of the applicant if considered necessary.
  • 5. Any applicants can not change or alter the information once the application form and all the necessary documents are accepted by the office.



Competition outline/rules/note

  • 1. The Japan-Hong Kong International Music Competition is conducted in two different categories of "Young Artist” Category and "Professional” Category.

  • Young Artist Category : Musicality, technical skills, performance manners of each paticipant will be judged in "absolute evaluation method"and Gold/Silver/Broze award will be given.

  • Professional Category : 1st/2nd/3rd Prizes will be chosen among all participants in "relative evaluation method" with strict and fair judgement in order to produce promising musicians. See "PRIZES" for all prizes and awards.
  • 2. Please kindly note that all the performances of the participants in this competition will be broadcasted in live at the competition venue, and recorded (video/sound) for possible future use. in addition, the recording of some participants may be sold as a packaged CD, or edited for producing a documentary film to be sold as a packaged DVD, or broadcasted via TV. The entire stage of this competition will be video recorded to be broadcasted via internet streaming. Kindly note that camera crews will operate the recording of the competition.
  • 3. Any conversation or communication between the participants to the competition and the jury members is prohibited. Any violator of this rule will be disqualified.
  • 4. Please kindly note that the committee of this competition has the right to change, alter, or redefine the outline of the competition, rules, content of the award, competition venue at any point and timing of the competition.
  • 5. All the judgement by the jury members in this competition will be final once the judgement is made. Any objection by the participants, their parents, or the instructor will not be accepted.



Note for participants in the competition

  • 1. Repertorie is free of choice. Maximum two music pieces can be registered upon entry.
  • 2. Number of participants is limited to 30 for each class of "Young Artist Category".
  • 3. All participants shall keep the designated time restriction (including the applause, performance pause, etc.) and not allowed to play beyond your allotted time.
  • 4. Please note that jury members have right to end performance of participants at any point.
  • 5. Participants shall not play with the repeat mark of the registered piece. Please play the entire piece without any repetition.
  • 6. Participants need to hand in the score of the music piece to the jury member, prior to the performance.

Competition Category/Class/Sections

Young Artist Category
Musicality, technical skills, performance manners of each paticipant will be judged in "absolute evaluation method".
Gold/Silver/Bronze and other award will be given depending on the level of participant's performance. (there is no limit on the number of the award) Repertoire is free of choice.



Professional Category
1st/2nd/3rd Prizes will be chosen among all participants in "relative evaluation method". Supplemental prizes will be awarded upon selection by jury members. Please refer to "Prize and Award" section for more detail.
Repertoire is free of choice.

  • i. Winners of the 1st/2nd/3rd Prizes will receive a precedent entry right to the final competition stage of the 17th Osaka International Music Competition, and Shimoda Music Competition in Japan.
  • ii. The 1st prize winner of each class will receive an invitation to perform in the Prize Winners Concert(Hong Kong). Additionally, other special prizes will be given including the invitation to the concerts in Japan. (Please refer to “Prize and Award” section. )

Prize and Award

All the participants of the competition will receive the certificate of participation from the Japan-Hong Kong International Music Competition signed by all the jury members.

-Young Artist Category
Musicality, technical skills, performance manners of each participants will be judged in absolute evaluation method, and Gold/Silver/Bronze and other medal will be awarded depending on the level of performance.

*Supplemental prizes might be awarded among participants of Young Artist Category upon nomination of jury members to receive the supplementary prizes of Professional Category.


-Professional Category
1st/2nd/3rd Prizes will be chosen among all participants in relative evaluation method. Winners will receive the certificate signed by all the jury members.

  • Award for prize winners in Professional Category :
  • 1st/2nd/3rd Prizeswinners will be awarded to participate in the final round of the 17th Osaka International Music Competition, and the 2nd Shimoda Music Competition.
  • The 1st prize winner of each class will receive an invitation to perform in the Prize Winners Concert (Hong Kong).


Supplementary prizes of "Professional Category" :

Tokai String Music Instructor Federation Prize:
Invitation will be made by jury members to participate in Patio Music Camp in Chiryu city, Aichi prefecture, Japan.
Chopin Prize:
Chopin International Piano Competition (Hartford, CT, U.S.A.) is awarding special prizes for those good performances of Chopin's piano pieces in The 4th Japan-Hong Kong International Music competition (This prize would be awarded among all participants of the Piano Section in both Professional/ Young Artist Category). Award winner will receive a medal and a certificate of merit.
Omori Bellport Prize:
Jury members might select and recommend the prize winners among competition participants to give performance in a concert held at Omori Bellport/Tokyo in Fall, 2016. The host will also provide reward to the prize winner.


*All participants of the competition will receive a certificate issued by Japan Hong Kong Musicians Alliance.
